On Saturday 24th January, APAH found a home for it's strangest animal yet.  A four foot pink and white rabbit was one of the raffle prizes in a raffle held at a fund raising event hosted by DJ'S bar in Campoamor, in conjunction with R and R Racing.
A race meeting with a difference was held to raise money for APAH.  A DVD is played on the television screen, giving people the opportunity to bet small amounts of money on the outcome of the races.  Seven out of eight horse races were bet on, and the eighth and last race involved people paying sponsorship money for the competing horses.  The winner of the eighth race was entitled to half of the sponsorship money, and APAH benefitted from the other half.
A very good buffet at a cost of 5 euros per head was put on by DJ'S and the event was very well supported, eventhough it had been held at short notice, with very little time for advertising.  Everyone who attended, appeared to have enjoyed the evening, eventhough no fortunes were made (or lost fortunately).
DJ'S, who also adopted an APAH dog, have offered to hold a similar event on Saturday 28th February, and this one will be advertised prior to the night.  We are very happy to announce that 182 euros was raised, and we look forward to helping to make the next race night an even bigger event.

Margaret McCabe took time out of her busy schedule when Exite FM invited APAH to do a radio interview in response to our decision to close our doors for three months. The radio interview was used to highlight the problems animal charities are facing because of the high level of abandonments by ex-pats going back to the UK, and not taking their beloved pets with them. Margaret also asked for volunteers to help in our shop, Sunday market stall and for the fostering of cats and dogs in people's homes. picture Margaret and Excite FM's morning DJ Nick Hawkins

Merry A.P.A.H. Xmas Thanks to

The Tone Zone

San Miguel de Salinas.

Kim and Steve Chenery who own The Tone Zone (toning tables gym) in San Miguel de Salinas hosted a Christmas fund raising event in support of the Asociacion Protectora de Animales Horadada (A.P.A.H.), at the Meson El Prado Restaurant in San Miguel.

The Dinner and Dance was very well supported by enthusiastic members of the 'Tone Zone Family' of customers, their families and friends, and members of APAH.  After enjoying meals which were of the usual high standard that this restaurant provides, the partygoers danced to music provided by Steve, who owns the Wheels of Steel mobile Disco.

An amazing 1,000 raffle tickets sold saw two full raffle ticket books off, and resulted in Kim making up make-shift raffle tickets to satisfy the demand!  Hampers of 'doggy' products and 'kitty' products had been put together by items donated in the weeks leading up to the Christmas Party.  Along with prizes such as a car valeting voucher, and a meal for two kindly donated by Davina and Joe at Birdies Bistro in Villa Martin Plaza impressive 'people' hampers, all the party-goers were keen to buy tickets.  The Christmas Party raised a fantastic total of 500 Euros, and the APAH members there expressed their gratitude by presenting Kim and Steve with a certificate acknowledging their hard work and the support that they and their customers have given APAH throughout this year.

This event is not the only thing that Kim and Steve have done in support of APAH during 2008.  Along with adopting two APAH dogs, in November Kim ran a very successful 'Bake Day' which involved Tone Zoners buying cakes, pastries and pickles and chutneys, prepared by 2 APAH volunteers.  The 'Bake Day' successfully raised 278 Euros.

APAH Forced To Close For Three Month's.

APAH regrets to have to announce that they are unable to accept any more dogs or cats for a period of THREE MONTHS.  Financial constraints and lack of space have forced us to close our doors until we have been able to find homes for some of the dogs and cats already in our care.  Anyone finding an animal in SEVERE DISTRESS, can contact Barbara or Chris (616 210 850 or 630 422 563) and the individual case will be considered.

Carp 'R' Us Raise 675€

Carp 'R' Us is a Sports and Social Club, with an emphasis on fishing, with match anglers and pleasure fishermen.  Every year, they vote on a charity which they will support during a particular membership year, with a sponsored fishing match, and other fund raising events.  This year, Carp 'R' Us decided to support two small local charities instead of one large one, and APAH, along with DEBRA (The Butterfly Children), have been the two lucky charities to be chosen.  At the end of the club year, the amount raised was divided into two, and given to both charities. At their 16th November club meeting, John Brightling, the Carp 'R' Us President, presented each charity with a cheque for 675 Euros.  APAH would like to use their web site to send a huge thank you to many members of the Carp 'R' Us club, for their continued support in the form of donating goods for sale, and for attending many of our fund raising events. A big thankyou to you all.

Hubble, Bubble, Toil And Trouble Raises 650€

Despite horrendous weather, the APAH Ugly Bug Ball went ahead on Saturday 1st November, as planned.  For people who don't know it, the Polideportivo,  (Sports Ground) at Campoverde, has a marquee with a permanent bar installed inside where events are held.

This is quite a drab, soulless area, and volunteers spent the afternoon  working hard  to transform it with balloons and Halloween decorations, all supplied by APAH members to keep the profit made on the tickets sales as high as possible.  The tables were decorated with black tablecloths and table decorations made from Halloween balloons and black ribbon.
We were very proud of all our effort.  Our ticket sales had suddenly taken off on the last few days before the event, and we looked forward to entertaining in excess of 100 people.
Unbelievably, the weather broke on us during the afternoon, and horrendous rain set in, which meant we had to fit everyone inside.  Our original plan had been to use the inside, and the immediate outside of the marquee, warmed by patio heaters, but this clearly was impossible.
200% Sounds International did a fantastic job of entertaining people, and Dave's Lamb and Pig Roast, did an excellent job, in extremely difficult conditions.  The rest of the food was supplied and prepared by APAH volunteers, again in an effort to keep the profit from the ticket sales at it's maximum, in order to help care for our rescued dogs and cats.
The President of APAH was asked to judge the children's fancy dress competition, and the d.j. judged the adult's fancy dress competition.  The excellent raffle prizes were very kindly donated by an APAH supporter.
We would like to thank everyone who attended and rallied round, hopefully enjoying themselves, despite the cramped conditions and the horrendous weather.  We know that the situation was not ideal, but the alternative would have been to cancel because of the weather, and let down not only the large number of people who had bought tickets and were looking forward to a good evening, but also the animals in our care, who were the reason for the whole event.   We sincerely apologise to the people who arrived to buy tickets on the night, and left because we simply did not have enough room for everyone.  In our defence, we can only say that the weather was just not on our side!. We are proud that all our hard work resulted in over 600 Euros profit, every centimos of which will be used to carry on our work, and to once again thank everyone who attended for the patience and support.
